Hair Color Correction Mistakes

Mistake #1: Hair Color Correction For Patchy Tone or Bleach Spots

When you use DIY hair color at home, lighter sections of your hair will tend to absorb more of the color and can result in an uneven look. To fix this problem, use a clarifying shampoo to wash your hair. This will remove some of the intensity of the dye for the following steps of hair color correction.

Next, reapply the same hair color, but make sure it does not process for as long. Try to apply the dye evenly to the sections of hair that did not absorb as much color and on the visibly darker sections. Last, purchase a hair color that is a slightly darker shade than the first and color your entire hair with this new color.

Bleach spots are an entirely different story. Bleach can cause some areas of your hair to become porous and fragile. If your hair is severely damaged, it may not be safe to reapply bleach. This problem needs to be fixed in a salon with a stylist who specializes in hair color correction.

You may temporarily tone your hair a few shades darker to get closer to your natural hair color. Using a moisturizing mask to replenish your hair can also help.

Mistake #2: Blonde Hair Color Correction

There are endless beautiful hues of blonde hair. And, there seems to be an infinite number of ways to miss the mark on the right shade of blonde to accentuate your look and style. Whether you tried for platinum, golden, honey or bronde, we can get you back on track.

Naturally light hair is missing many of the warm colors like red and yellow. If you simply apply a dark dye to blonde hair, the result is usually a flat, dull color, sometimes with a green undertone. Pre-pigmentation, or filling your hair with warmer pigments before applying a darker shade of brown, is the best method for rich shades. This process also allows deeper blonde shades with brunette tones to last a few more weeks.

Our stylists trust the color wheel for hair color correction. They know the color opposite of yellow is purple. Some blonde colors develop a yellowish tinge over time and there is a solution for this. To combat that yellowish shade, you’ll need to use a purple ash toner. Adding shine back into your blonde, this will lighten the warmer tones and provide a more even distribution of the ashy color.

Maybe your platinum blonde look is missing a warm tone. Or, your hair turned out too light in color. No problem, it’s time to adjust the tone. You need to add warmth to balance out a cool tone. Consider the following to remove ashy tones:

  • Reds
  • Warm orange
  • Deeper yellows

You add a warm toner along with a developer to evenly distribute the color.

Mistake #3: Darker Hair Color Correction

You were ready for a drastic, darker hair color, but you didn’t realize how dark this shade would go. You need to fix the color. Darker hair color correction usually requires more than one sitting, since you should only lift your hair two shades lighter or less in each session. Some solutions start with bleaching your darker hair. You later return to dye your hair to a lighter brunette or simply add a warmer tone.

If you have dyed your blonde hair darker than you expected, a clarifying shampoo may help in a shorter time frame. Chemically processed hair is more difficult to correct, as undertones of pigments become exposed, revealing unwanted shades. A neutralizing hue can help balance these new shades that appear in the hair color correction process.

Mistake #4: Ombre Hair Color Correction

When that sunset ombre hair color goes wrong, you may be left with some extreme color differences. There are ways to transform this mistake into a beautiful look.

If your hair is naturally darker brown and you were trying for blonde tips, try a warm tone shade and a semi-permanent hair color correction dye. Use the semi-permanent color from mid-length to the tips to create a more gradual ombre. If you use a dark permanent color over dip-dyed hair, you risk a blocky result.

If coloring does not seem like an option, you can select a toner to blend out the harsh color line. The goal of this hair color correction method is a more evenly distributed ombre color.

Mistake #5: Brassy Hair Color Correction

You imagined a warm, brunette shade, perfect for autumn. Unfortunately, the mirror revealed another reality–orange, brassy tones. This is frequently a problem for those with lighter hair, but this unwanted tone can be changed with extra care.

We recommend that you use a blue tinted shampoo and conditioner. This will lift the depths of your color and remove the reddish or orange undertones. Carefully select cool toned hair products to prevent brassy color from reappearing. A glossy neutralizer will also give your hair a protective sheen, keeping it moisturized and fresh.

Mistake #6: Highlights And Hair Color Correction

Uneven or blocky highlights can be embarrassing. To create more natural, blended highlights refer back to the base color of your hair roots. Base colors tend to be closer to your natural hair color or a shade lighter. Soften your highlights by blending them in with your base color.

If blending with your roots seems like too much detailed work, you can try a semi-permanent dye to reduce the contrast between your highlights and the rest of your hair. You don’t want to add more highlights, and run the risk of damaging your already fragile hair.
