Apprentice Hair Designer

The Hair Design apprenticeship program at Jyl Craven Hair Design is an alternative path for cosmetology students to gain the training needed to pursue licensure in Georgia. Students work with a licensed cosmetologist at our salon and receive one-on-one training. Apprentices start by observing their sponsor and gradually work into practicing techniques on real clients. Aside from the cost of buying tools and miscellaneous items associated with your learning, there is no additional cost to our apprenticeship program.  And, as a valued apprentice at our salon, you will be paid for your work while you learn.

Hair Apprenticeships: An Alternative to Traditional Beauty School

Beauty school is not the only way to earn a license in in the field of cosmetology. The Georgia State Board of Cosmetology and Barbers offers a path to licensure through the Hair Designer Apprenticeship Program. Hair apprenticeships allow students to prepare for licensure through hands-on training and mentorship in a salon setting. As a state approved salon, Jyl Craven Hair Design offers a state-of-the-art, paid hair apprenticeship program to prepare you for a Georgia license in hair design.

Our Hair Designer Apprenticeship Program is an earn-while-you-learn program. We value your work and want you to get paid while you learn. Opportunities for pay increases occur as you progress through the program.

The difference between Hair Apprenticeships and Cosmetology School

Cosmetology school and hair design apprenticeships are both valid ways of receiving the training needed to earn your professional license. Both routes give students hands-on training as well as education in industry ethics, theory, best practices, and professional development, but there are important differences between apprenticeships and cosmetology school that you should consider before choosing one or the other. The first is cost.

Cosmetology school costs more. While some apprenticeships do charge tuition, many are free. Students typically have to pay for their styling supplies, but this is always less than tuition for a cosmetology school.  Apprentices get hands-on training right out of the gate, whereas cosmetology students typically spend the first part of their training with textbooks, lectures, and demonstrations. Depending on your learning preferences, this could be a positive or a drawback. Apprentices also get one-on-one training rather than the group training typical in beauty schools. The second consideration is time. A hair design apprenticeship takes more time to complete than a cosmetology school program. Specific hours vary between states, but apprentices can generally expect to spend twice as much time in their apprenticeship than they would in beauty school. This can be a drawback if you’re eager to get your license and don’t have your heart set on a premier salon for your initial employment.

Benefits of Hair Apprenticeships

We interviewed our stylists about their hair apprenticeship experience and this is what they had to say:

Ansley joined the salon’s apprenticeship program and became a hair stylist in 2014.

“I love my job because of the uniqueness of the industry. I like helping people look good so they can feel good. Being a part of that is the absolute best!

The Hair Designer Apprenticeship at Jyl Craven Hair Design allowed me to pursue a career and still provide for my family financially.Learning in a hands on environment, I was able to not only develop my technical skills but more importantly understand the customer skills needed to be successful.  By having my educator on staff, I can continue to grow and refine myself professionally even after I completed my apprenticeship.”

Holly joined the salon’s apprenticeship program and became a hair stylist in 2018.

“The Hair Designer Apprenticeship program completely changed my life. I have grown not only in my skill set and knowledge of hair, but also as a person. For instance, I went from not knowing how to hold a pair of scissors correctly to a confident stylist behind the chair.  The educator(s) genuinely care and want to see you succeed. They take their time to mentor and help you grow.  I am so thankful to have had the opportunity and support from everyone at Jyl Craven Hair Design and to now be doing what I love!”

“I chose this industry because it allows me to never stop learning. I feel it’s very important in this industry to always grasp new skills and techniques. I love my job because I get to interact with people and build relationships.

The apprenticeship at Jyl Craven Hair Design allowed me to get hands on training in the salon from the start.  For me that was so important because I am a visual learner and love direct experience.  Being surrounded by amazing educators and a family-oriented team not only help me grow in my career as a hairstylist but also as a person.  I am so thankful I got the opportunity to go through this program.
